The Pew Charitable Trusts, BirdLife International, and Errhalt Consulting will host an informational webinar on promoting fisheries governance, sustainability, and monitoring in the Pacific region. Guest speakers will include Masanori Miyahara and Gakushi Ishimura, who will discuss tuna fisheries and IUUF. Representing Birdlife International, Yasuko Suzuki will present on mitigation measures against seabird bycatch.
Focusing on longline transshipment and EM "electronic monitoring," the webinar will show how the longline fleet operating in the Pacific Ocean needs additional monitoring to protect fish stocks. While no flag state has completely eliminated illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing (IUUF), Japan's fleet is generally more compliant than many other countries in the region. Thus, Japan is in a unique position to serve as a benchmark for fisheries sustainability in Asia. By promoting sustainable measures that have less impact on the Japanese fleet compared to foreign fleets, Japan can enforce sustainability standards in RFMOs which will impact their more compliant fleet less than competitors.

延縄漁業の転載とEM「エレクトロニク・モニタリング」に焦点を当て、太平洋で操業する延縄船団が魚類資源を守るために、いかにさらなる監視を必要としているかを紹介します。違法、無報告、無規制（IUU）漁業を完全に排除している旗国はありませんが、日本の船団はこの地域の他の多くの国よりも、一般的にコンプライアンスに優れています。したがって日本は、アジアにおける漁業の持続可能性の指標となるユニークな立場にあります。外国船団と比較して日本船団に対する影響が少ない持続可能な手段を推進することにより、日本は、遵守していない外国船団に日本と同じ基準を強制することができます。そうすることにより、日本の漁業関係者は持続可能性を強みとして、他者にコンプライアンスを強いることができるのです。
